Fe-Mn-sepiolite as an effective heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst for the decolorization of reactive brilliant blue

Chengyuan SU,Weiguang LI,Xingzhe LIU,Xiaofei HUANG,Xiaodan YU

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2016, Volume 10, Issue 1,   Pages 37-45 doi: 10.1007/s11783-014-0729-y

Abstract: A study of the decolorization of reactive brilliant blue in an aqueous solution using Fe-Mn-sepiolite as a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst has been performed. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of the catalyst showed bending vibrations of the Fe-O. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the catalyst showed characteristic diffraction peaks of α-Fe O , γ-Fe O and MnO. A four factor central composite design (CCD) coupled with response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to evaluate and optimize the important variables (catalyst addition, hydrogen peroxide dosage, initial pH value and initial dye concentration). When the reaction conditions were catalyst dosage= 0.4 g, [H O ]= 0.3 mL, pH= 2.5, [reactive brilliant blue] = 50 mg·L , and volume of solution= 500 mL at room temperature, the decolorization efficiency of reactive brilliant blue was 91.98% within 60 min. Moreover, the Fe-Mn-sepiolite catalyst had good stability for the degradation of reactive brilliant blue even after six cycles. Leaching of iron ions (<0.4 mg·L ) was observed. The decoloring process was reactive brilliant blue specific via a redox reaction. The benzene ring and naphthalene ring were first oxidized to open ring; these were then oxidized to the alcohol and carboxylic acid. The reactive brilliant blue was decomposed mainly by the attack of ·OH radicals including surface-bound ·OH radicals generated on the catalyst surface.

Abstract: It is observed that a less permeable, stronger silty sand layer in an otherwise homogeneous sandy soilNo shear band is found to initiate in a homogeneous sandy soil slope, whereas for a non-homogeneous slopeA discontinuity of the shear zone is also observed for the case of a non-homogeneous soil slope. The factor of safety of a non-homogeneous, unsaturated soil slope decreases because of the less permeable

Xuying WANG, Bin ZHANG

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2016, Volume 10, Issue 4, doi: 10.1007/s11783-016-0840-3

Abstract: We modeled the impact of haze radiative effects on precipitation in North China.Convection was the key factor that whether precipitation was enhanced or suppressed.Precipitation was often suppressed where CAPE, RH and updraft velocities were high. The convection was stronger over places with precipitation enhancement over 30 mm.water vapor to rise to a higher level and thus further suppressed precipitation.

Evaluation of precipitation behavior of zirconium molybdate hydrate

Liang ZHANG, Masayuki TAKEUCHI, Tsutomu KOIZUMI, Izumi HIRASAWA

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2013, Volume 7, Issue 1,   Pages 65-71 doi: 10.1007/s11705-013-1314-9

Abstract: In the dissolution step of spent nuclear fuel, there is a world-concern problem that zirconium molybdate hydrate precipitates as a byproduct, and accumulates in some reprocessing equipments. In order to prevent this accumulation, we have developed a new method based on the controlled reaction crystallization of zirconium molybdate hydrate (ZMH) in the reprocessing solution, followed by solid liquid separation. In order to measure the particle size of ZMH, batch crystallization experiments were conducted by varying nitric acid concentration and operating temperature. In result, almost all particle sizes scatter around 1 μm on average, despite the higher concentration of nitric aid and operating temperature, and then small particles grow up as an aggregate sticking to the crystallizer. Moreover, polymorph and color changing were observed by varying the concentration of nitric acid and reaction time. These results suggest that crystal color and adhesiveness are closely related to the particle size of ZMH. And the control of nitric acid concentration and small particle growth would be the useful technique to prevent the ZMH sticking.
